Why I Serve
All of my life I have volunteered. Sitting down to consider why – I see that serving others is the most human thing we can do. It is our purpose to uplift and inspire. As we walk through this world we have opportunities. Some we have worked for and some seemingly appear. We drive with the oncoming lane right next to us and don’t usually recognize – that thread between life and change is so thin and so close. Some people are on the other side of this thread through no fault of their own. Some are there due to choices. Every day we can make a difference in the way we treat others and even ourselves. This costs nothing but our discipline. It is easy to feel overwhelmed at where to start to make a difference as there is so much that “needs fixing”. Serving others is a way to reach out in the world we are already a part of.
Beyond kindness and acknowledging others we can start to be the change and buy and distribute food and clothing. Volunteer with orgs already in place doing a good work in your area. When I volunteer, I often ask what area needs it the most. I will go there. Jobs people don’t want are usually the most rewarding.
On a walk recently I came across this $0.75 can of dog food with a plastic fork at a park. Imagine being so hungry. These people are among us and ready to be accepted.
If you already volunteer yay! Urging you to reach out to a local org and swap some free time for your community.
